Active Duty and Veterans are not restricted to traditional classrooms or courses of study. Other Benefits and Allowances
The Post-9/11 GI Bill provides up to 36 months of education benefits, payable for up to 15 years following separation or retirement from active duty. Institutions of higher learning participating in the Yellow Ribbon Program may make additional funds available without an additional charge to your GI Bill entitlement. Schools participating in this secondary program can waive up to 50 percent of tuition, fees and other costs. These payments may also be available:
As noted before, servicemembers may also transfer unused GI Bill benefits to their dependents under certain circumastances.
Other Factors to Consider
- Full tuition and fees are paid directly to the school for all public school in-state students.
- For those attending private or foreign schools, tuition and fees are capped at the national maximum rate.
- If you attend a private institution of higher learning in Arizona, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, or Texas, you may be eligible for a higher tuition reimbursement rate. For more information, you can check out the Veterans Administration website here.
High Technology Programs And Accelerated Payments
High Technology programs are considered particlarly important for the economic well-being of the U.S. and have been identified for special economic assistance by the Veteran’s Administration. If you enroll in an approved high-technology program and certify that you will seek employment after graduation in a high-technology industry as defined below, you may be eligible for accelerated payments. These payments replace traditional GI Bill benefits that you would otherwise receive. Qualified veterans get a lump-sum payment of 60 percent of all tuition and fees for an approved program. This payment will cover programs from the Animal Sciences, Bio-Psychology to Radio, Television and Digital Communications.
In addition to Veterans, Public Law 110-181 authorized an accelerated payment option for Reserve GI Bill and REAP recipients. Payments are limited to Reservists in a non-degree program of two years or less. Tuition and fees must be over 200 percent of the monthly amount of educational assistance a Reservist would be eligible to receive otherwise while in the program. Not that there is no accelerated payment available to those in the Dependents Education Assistance Program or the VEAP.
